About H2@TN

The Provincial Council, with resolution no. 339 of 5 March 2021, adopted the Provincial Environmental Energy Plan (PEAP) which aims at supporting Trentino in the development of its own research and development roadmap – from the point of view of hydrogen production, transport and distribution, end-uses -and identifies as a priority the production/distribution and financing of medium-term research and innovation projects on hydrogen.

Hydrogen is one of the essential elements of the green energy revolution, as it is a fundamental energy vector to enable decarbonisation. Hydrogen is also crucial for the objectives of the European Green Deal program linked to the Recovery and Resilience plans.

Trentino’s advanced research system can support the development of many key elements of the future hydrogen supply chain, including new hydrogen production techniques at more competitive prices, without the production of CO2 (green or low-carbon hydrogen).

The University of Trento and the Centre for Sustainable Energy of FBK have taken up the decarbonisation challenge by developing a research project on hydrogen and its impact on the future Green energy economy. The project focuses on different activities, in order to reach the set objectives:

Green hydrogen production via photoelectrochemical cells using solar energy, led by UNITN

Realisation of high-temperature electrolysis systems, led by FBK;

Production of hydrogen from organic materials, led by UNITN, which will focus on the production of hydrogen from biogas/biomethane resulting from biomass conversion;

Through the proposed activities, the project aims at producing a significant impact on the territory of the Province of Trento, in various areas:

Development of technologies validated at laboratory scale and ready for the market

Enhancing the independence of the territory from imports of fuels, giving a push to energy production in a broader sense

Strengthening of the Project Partners skills in strategic areas for the European research and innovation sectors

Establishment of synergies among local companies and industries that already deal with hydrogen and, at the same time, fostering the attraction of new companies

Identification of the Province of Trento as one of the leading territories at European level for infrastructures related to the theme of research and innovation on hydrogen technologies
